Mission Complete!
UPDATE 1/28/2011 -- It is with sincere concern for the health and continued well being of Troy Yokum, that Soldiers’ Angels must withdraw its current sponsorship and support of Hike for our Heroes.
While on his journey Troy has suffered from kidney stones as well as injuries to his feet which have demonstrated potential medical danger and that without a full medical clearance from a Medical Professional its in his best interests to not continue his mission at this time.
Soldiers’ Angels will continue the previous and ongoing mission of supporting our nation's returning heroes and veterans that Troy Yokum’s efforts contributed to in support of veterans and their families.
We at Soldiers’ Angels applaud his efforts to date, as it is truly a remarkable feat, and pledge that we will assist him as he transitions into the next phase or chapter of his life with his wife.
Any donations received by SA in support of this project will be applied directly to veterans support activities.
Drum Hike for Our Heroes
Soldiers’ Angels proudly supports former US Army Specialist Troy Yocum as he hikes and drums 7000 miles across America, raising needed funds for struggling military families. The 16-month journey, which began in April 2010, crosses 30 states and 37 major cities in effort to “drum up” donations, support and awareness for military families who need financial assistance. Funds raised are distributed to worthy families through Soldiers' Angels.
As he hikes, Troy displays his skills as a drummer, using a variety of drums and marching percussion instruments. His goal is to “drum up” five million dollars in donations. Throughout his Drum Hike, Yocum is also carrying a custom Louisville Slugger baseball bat for Mayors and Governors to sign, assisting in Soldiers' Angels' bid to declare Oct. 26 “Day of the Deployed,” a national day of honor. Yocum will present the bat to the White House on May 11, 2011.
Yocum is live-streaming his journey, presenting a video blog and interviewing US veterans on DrumHike.com while tracking his progress on Google Earth.
Activities
Benefit events associated with the Hike span the nation, including motorcycle rallies by the Patriot Guard Riders, a Blue Star Mothers convention, mini marathons, concerts and meet-and-greets. Throughout the Hike, Yocum is also “running the bases” at over 20 MLB/Minor League Baseball stadiums, teaming up with “Heroes of the Diamond” to entertain fans and honor America with patriotic events at stadiums, and paticipating in ceremonies to rename America's highways for fallen heroes of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
